Chicago’s utilities, energy companies, and industrial players actively partner with climate startups. These are the organizations opening their infrastructure, grids, and customers to new technology.
Invenergy
Invenergy is one of North America's largest privately held renewable developers and it is headquartered in Chicago, which makes it the region's most consequential industry partner for energy founders. It engages startups as a named partner of the Polsky Center's cleantech accelerator and through mHUB's energy programming, and it anchored the creation of Energize Capital, so a relationship can run from mentorship through to a strategic investor conversation. There is no open startup application, so the route in is the programs it backs.
Constellation
Constellation is the Chicago-headquartered clean-energy generator spun out of Exelon and the largest operator of nuclear generation in the country, which makes it a natural counterparty for founders working on clean firm power, load flexibility, and grid services. It does not run a standing open startup program, and its startup-facing engagement has come through sponsoring accelerator cohorts and evaluating technologies for pilots, so founders should approach through mHUB rather than looking for an application form.
Exelon Climate Change Investment Initiative
The Climate Change Investment Initiative, known as 2c2i, is Exelon's venture-style program for early-stage clean energy and environmental sustainability companies, run from its Chicago headquarters with the Exelon Foundation. It is one of the few utility programs with a genuine open application cycle rather than an invitation-only pipeline, and it favours companies operating in the territories Exelon's utilities serve, which includes northern Illinois. Alongside investment it opens the door to utility operators who can evaluate and pilot a technology.
ComEd
ComEd is the Exelon utility serving northern Illinois, and it is the counterparty for anything touching distribution, electrification, demand flexibility, or efficiency in the Chicago area. Its startup engagement runs through occasional open innovation challenges and pilot evaluation rather than a standing program, and the durable investment route is Exelon's 2c2i initiative.
