The capital backing climate companies in Amsterdam.
From SET Ventures and Rubio Impact Ventures to the funds investing across the region, here is a starter map of the investors active in the local climate ecosystem.
SET Ventures
SET Ventures has been investing in the digital layer of the energy transition from Amsterdam since long before that was a category, backing software and data companies across generation, distribution, storage, and consumption. It leads at Series A and into early growth, and its limited partners include European grid operators and energy companies, which turns diligence conversations into customer conversations more often than most funds manage.
Rubio Impact Ventures
Rubio Impact Ventures is an Amsterdam impact fund that ties its own economics to measured impact rather than reporting it after the fact, investing early across the climate crisis and social inequality. It backs companies in circular economy, food and health systems, and worker-centered models, and it has been doing so long enough to have a European track record and a backer list running from the European Investment Fund to Dutch institutions.
Pymwymic
Pymwymic is one of Europe's oldest impact investing communities, based in Amsterdam, and its name is an instruction to put your money where your meaning is. Its funds concentrate on healthy food systems, investing at early stage into regenerative agriculture, food technology, and supply-chain companies, and capital arrives with a co-investing member community of families and entrepreneurs rather than only a fund team. It is a food and agriculture specialist rather than a general climate or energy fund.
ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund
The ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund is the bank's own balance-sheet impact investor, based in Amsterdam and investing in energy transition, the built environment, and sustainable consumption. It writes larger cheques into companies that already have revenue and a route to scale, with occasional smaller venture tickets, and it brings sector expertise plus the debt and corporate-finance capability of a large bank. It is a growth investor rather than a seed one.
Invest-NL
Invest-NL is the Dutch state's investment institution, headquartered in Amsterdam, with an explicit mandate to finance the energy transition and deep technology where private capital will not go alone. It invests directly into scale-ups, runs a deep-tech fund with the national government, and commits as a limited partner into the Dutch climate funds that in turn back early companies, so it shapes the market as much as it participates in it. Direct investments skew to growth stage rather than seed.
ROM InWest
ROM InWest is the regional development company for North Holland, covering Amsterdam and its metropolitan area, investing through funds aimed at small and medium enterprises and at the energy and circular transitions. It writes early cheques, often alongside other regional and national investors, and pairs money with business developers who help companies navigate Dutch subsidy schemes and regional institutions.
DOEN Participaties
DOEN Participaties is the Amsterdam early-stage impact investor connected to the DOEN Foundation, investing patient capital into companies working on climate, circular materials, and social inclusion. It takes on ventures that look too early or too unconventional for commercial funds, stays on cap tables for a long time, and is one of the few Dutch investors that will fund a first commercial step.
SHIFT Invest
SHIFT Invest is one of the more genuinely early Dutch climate investors, backing companies from proof of concept through Series A across energy, industry, mobility, and food and agriculture. Its backers include the European Investment Fund, a Dutch bank, the national investment institution, an airport operator, and Dutch research organizations, which gives portfolio companies unusually direct access to industrial partners. It is based in Amstelveen, inside the Amsterdam metropolitan area rather than the city proper.
Anterra Capital
Anterra Capital is an Amsterdam agrifood technology specialist that began as a bank spinout and now invests from seed through later rounds, with offices in Boston and London alongside the Amsterdam base. It concentrates on the technology layer of food and agriculture, from crop genetics and animal health through supply chain, and it co-founded a long-running Dutch agrifood investor gathering with a bank and an agricultural university.
Curiosity VC
Curiosity is an Amsterdam pre-seed and seed investor in applied artificial intelligence software, and it names energy and climate technology among its focus areas alongside other verticals, covering smart grid, clean energy, solar, and battery software. It is a vertical software generalist rather than a climate specialist, which makes it a good fit for software-first climate founders and a poor one for hardware.
UvA Ventures Holding
UvA Ventures Holding is the University of Amsterdam's investment arm, taking stakes in spinouts and providing the first capital that turns a research result into a company, with an academic angel fund alongside it for smaller cheques. Recent activity includes companies working on sustainable nanomaterials and battery electrolytes, which shows the sustainability pipeline is real rather than notional.
TNO Ventures
TNO is the Dutch applied research organization, and its venture arm creates spinouts and takes stakes in startups building on TNO technology across energy, industry, and materials, with the option for young companies to pay in shares rather than cash. TNO's principal sites are outside Amsterdam, so treat this as a national resource reachable from the city rather than a local one.
